Daguerreotype and wet-plate collodion (silver chemistry on glass)
The daguerreotype process, announced in Paris in 1839 and first commercially practiced in the United States in 1840, produced a single, non-reproducible image on a silver-coated copper plate. Every portrait session required coating the plate, exposing it before it dried (within about ten minutes for the wet-collodion process introduced in 1851), and developing it immediately. The photographer was equal parts chemist, optician, and portrait artist. A studio required a darkroom, a supply of volatile chemicals, and the ability to manage clients who had to hold perfectly still for exposures of several seconds. The wet-collodion process, introduced by Frederick Scott Archer in 1851, replaced the daguerreotype by enabling multiple paper prints from a single glass negative -- a genuine reproduction technology -- and dominated commercial photography through the 1870s. The craft demanded mastery of chemistry that most portrait painters never needed to acquire.
Effect on the workThe technical complexity of wet-plate photography created a real barrier to entry that kept the professional photographer distinct from the amateur. By 1880 roughly 10,000 Americans made their living as photographers, overwhelmingly in portrait studios in cities and towns, with a smaller cohort doing outdoor and documentary work.

George Eastman's invention of a machine to coat glass plates with dry gelatin in 1879 transformed the economics of professional photography. Where wet-plate photographers had to mix and coat their own plates immediately before use, dry plates could be purchased pre-coated, kept for weeks, and developed at leisure after a full day of shooting. Eastman founded the Eastman Dry Plate Company in 1881 and launched the first Kodak roll-film hand camera in 1888, followed by the iconic Kodak Brownie in 1900 (priced at one dollar). These consumer products created mass amateur photography without eliminating the professional photographer; they expanded the total visual culture and created demand for professional work that amateurs could not produce. A professional portrait, a newspaper photograph, or a commercial advertising image required a studio setup, darkroom expertise, and the ability to direct subjects -- skills that a Brownie owner did not possess. The large-format view camera, capable of producing 8x10-inch negatives of extraordinary detail, remained the standard tool for commercial and architectural photography through the 1930s.
Effect on the workThe ease of dry plates and roll film enabled a rapid expansion of the photography profession in the 1880s and 1890s, with the census count of photographers doubling from about 10,000 in 1880 to 20,000 in 1890. Itinerant and rural photographers became viable as the need for a darkroom truck diminished.

The Leica I, introduced at the Leipzig Fair in 1925, put a compact 35mm camera on the map, but its real cultural impact on professional photography arrived in the 1930s when photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Margaret Bourke-White demonstrated what the small, handheld format could do in fast-moving situations. Kodak's Kodachrome transparency film, introduced in 1935 as the first practical color film, fundamentally changed commercial and magazine photography: Life magazine launched the same year, and by 1937 was reaching 1.7 million readers per week with photographs as the primary editorial content. The 35mm rangefinder (Leica, Contax) gave photojournalists and documentary photographers speed and discretion; the large-format view camera still dominated advertising and portrait work. Together these tools established the two broad tracks that characterized professional photography for decades: the street-speed handheld worker and the slow, deliberate studio or architectural specialist.

Nippon Kogaku introduced the Nikon F in April 1959 -- the first 35mm SLR camera system to be widely adopted by professional photographers worldwide. Unlike rangefinders, the SLR showed the photographer exactly what the lens saw, through the same optical path, enabling precise framing with telephoto and wide-angle lenses. The Nikon F was adopted by NASA for the Mercury program and by photojournalists covering the Vietnam War; it completely eclipsed the Leica M rangefinder in professional use within a decade. Canon's FD system, introduced in 1971, provided a competing professional ecosystem. By the 1970s virtually every professional photojournalist, commercial photographer, and sports shooter worked with a 35mm SLR and a system of interchangeable lenses. The professional photographer's kit -- a camera body, wide, normal, and telephoto lenses, external flash, and a bag -- became the recognizable equipment profile of the occupation.
Effect on the workThe SLR system's versatility and reliability enabled the full flowering of photojournalism as a profession. By 1980, BLS estimated roughly 93,000 photographers working across the United States, including large staff photography departments at major newspapers and a robust commercial photography industry serving advertising, corporate, and editorial clients.

The Kodak DCS 100 -- a customized Nikon F3 body attached to a digital storage unit -- was released in May 1991 as the world's first commercially available digital SLR. Priced at $20,000 to $25,000, it was aimed at photojournalists who needed to transmit images to newsrooms without processing film. The DCS prototype had been developed for Associated Press trials. The real inflection point for the broader profession came in 1999 when Nikon introduced the D1 at approximately $5,500 -- the first professional-grade DSLR within reach of working photographers rather than only major publications. Canon followed with the EOS-1D in 2001. By 2004, digital camera sales overtook film camera sales globally, and by 2007 professional film use had effectively ended for news, sports, and most commercial work. The transition was economically disruptive in both directions: film processing labs closed in their thousands, but photographers who had invested in darkroom equipment and consumables saw their cost of goods plummet. The key structural shift was the elimination of the delay between capture and delivery: a newspaper photographer could transmit a finished image from a camera body wirelessly at the final whistle of a sporting event.
Effect on the workThe digital transition eliminated the substantial sub-industry of photo-lab workers, film processors, and color correctionists who had supported film photographers. Within the photography occupation itself, digital raised individual productivity (no limit on exposures) but simultaneously created a supply explosion of images that began to erode stock photography prices.

iStockphoto, founded in 2000, pioneered the microstock model: a large community of amateur and semi-professional photographers contributing images for license at a few dollars per download, replacing the rights-managed stock market where a single image might command hundreds or thousands of dollars. Shutterstock launched in 2003; Getty Images acquired iStockphoto in 2006 for $50 million. By 2010, the microstock platforms had fundamentally repriced the stock photography market from the top down. Images that had generated $200-500 each under the rights-managed model now sold for $3-15 in a crowded microstock marketplace. This represented one of the most significant wage-compression events in the profession's history: a whole income tier that had sustained independent photographers -- the stock photography licensing income stream -- collapsed from a living to a trickle for most practitioners. Staff photographer positions at print newspapers simultaneously declined sharply as newspaper revenues fell with the digital migration of classified advertising.
Effect on the workThe combination of microstock commoditization and newspaper contraction eliminated the two employment structures (stock residuals + staff positions) that had supported a middle tier of the profession. The occupation bifurcated toward the specialist top (commercial, advertising, fine art, medical photography) and the event-based bottom (weddings, portraits, sports).

Sony introduced the A7 and A7R in October 2013 -- the first full-frame mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras designed for professional use. By decoupling the sensor from the mirror box, Sony produced a camera that was smaller, quieter, and capable of an electronic viewfinder that showed the photographer a live exposure preview. By 2018, Canon (EOS R) and Nikon (Z6/Z7) had launched competing professional mirrorless systems, and by the early 2020s Nikon and Canon had ceased releasing new flagship DSLR bodies. For professional photographers, the mirrorless transition offered real improvements in autofocus (particularly for moving subjects), video capability, and low-light performance. The shift was a tool upgrade, not a structural disruption to the profession; it changed what photographers carried but not the underlying value of what they did.

DALL-E 2 (April 2022), Midjourney (July 2022), and Stable Diffusion (August 2022) brought photorealistic AI image generation to the mainstream within a single year. By 2023, AI-generated imagery had reached sufficient quality to substitute for generic stock photography: concept images, illustration-adjacent commercial imagery, and product mockups that once required a photographer and creative team could be generated in minutes for essentially no cost. A 2023 analysis estimated that AI-generated images could replace up to 20% of stock photo revenue by 2025, and early evidence from the major microstock platforms suggested significant upload declines from human contributors. For the stock photography income stream -- already compressed by microstock -- this represented a near-complete structural disruption. The impact on premium photography (weddings, events, commercial campaigns, documentary, fine art, sports, medical, legal) has been far more limited: AI cannot yet replace a photographer's physical presence, real-time judgment, relationship with subjects, or legal proof of an actual moment. AI editing tools (Adobe Firefly, Lightroom generative remove, Photoshop generative fill) have simultaneously augmented the professional photographer's post-processing workflow, reducing hours spent on tedious retouching.
