  • Clinical observation + Binet-Simon scale (1905)

    Lightner Witmer's clinic at the University of Pennsylvania relied on careful clinical observation, case histories, and collaborative consultation with teachers and physicians. The primary tool was the trained eye of the psychologist. The Binet-Simon scale, published by Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon in Paris in 1905, changed this: for the first time a psychologist could administer a standardized sequence of age-graded tasks and produce a mental-age score that was comparable across children and examiners. Binet designed the scale specifically to identify children who needed alternative educational placements, making it inherently a school psychology tool from the moment of its invention.

  • Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale (Lewis Terman, 1916) and Army group tests

    Lewis Terman at Stanford University published the Stanford-Binet in 1916, a thorough American revision of the Binet-Simon scale that introduced the concept of the intelligence quotient (IQ) as mental age divided by chronological age, multiplied by 100. The scale was individually administered, age-calibrated, and norm-referenced against a large standardization sample, making it the central instrument of school psychological practice for the next three decades. World War I added a parallel development: the Army Alpha (verbal) and Army Beta (non-verbal) group intelligence tests, developed in 1917-1918 to classify 1.7 million military recruits. The group-testing format proved that intelligence assessment could be administered to rooms full of people simultaneously, and school systems adapted the methods rapidly, embedding group testing in routine school practice throughout the 1920s and 1930s.

  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC, 1949) and projective techniques

    David Wechsler published the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children in 1949, designed for children aged five through fifteen. Unlike the Stanford-Binet, which produced a single IQ score via a unitary verbal format, the WISC separated Verbal IQ from Performance IQ and produced a Full Scale IQ, giving school psychologists a more nuanced profile of a child's cognitive strengths and weaknesses. The WISC-R (1974 revision) updated norms and addressed ethnic and socioeconomic sampling concerns. Alongside cognitive testing, this era also saw the widespread use of projective techniques (Rorschach inkblots, Thematic Apperception Test) and personality inventories in school psychology practice, reflecting the influence of psychodynamic theory. The tool suite of the school psychologist from 1949 through the 1980s was essentially a battery: cognitive testing (WISC), personality assessment (projectives), academic achievement testing (WRAT, Woodcock-Johnson), and behavioral rating scales, all administered and interpreted by a single specialist.

    The 1990s brought two intersecting changes to school psychology practice. First, computer-based scoring programs for cognitive and achievement batteries (early Pearson and PAR scoring software, DOS-era programs that ran on school district servers) dramatically reduced the time required to convert raw test scores into normed tables and written summaries, allowing school psychologists to manage larger caseloads. Second, the profession itself began a deliberate philosophical shift. School psychologists also increasingly used telehealth platforms for remote evaluations, a practice that the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 forced into rapid mainstream adoption.

    Generative AI entered the everyday workflow of school psychologists primarily through report writing, which has historically consumed the largest share of non-assessment professional time. ChatGPT (released November 2022) was adopted rapidly for drafting psychoeducational evaluation report narratives, IEP goals, behavioral observation summaries, and parent-communication letters.
